WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital Laboratory earns accreditations

 

UNIONTOWN, Pa. – The WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital Laboratory has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and from the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) for blood bank operations.

 

“These accreditations showcase the great work being done by our dedicated lab staff,” David Hess, M.D., CEO of Uniontown Hospital, said. “Through the pandemic and when our patients needed them most, our crew in the lab did the work and did it well.”

 

The Accreditation Committee of CAP awarded the accreditation to the hospital laboratory based on results of an on-site inspection of the facility earlier this year. CAP inspectors perform unannounced inspections of the laboratory every two years. CAP is the leading organization of board-certified pathologists, serving patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide. It was founded in 1946.

 

Established in 1947, AABB is an international, nonprofit organization committed to ensuring the standards of transfusion medicine, cellular therapies, and patient blood management. The AABB accreditation was earned following an intensive on-site assessment of the lab in late spring that revealed the hospital met or exceeded the standards set forth by AABB. The AABB inspection is also an unannounced inspection that occurs every two years.

 

“The AABB’s accreditation procedures are voluntary,” Mark Dillon, vice president of clinical operations, said. “This is an accreditation we seek because it provides another benchmark of the clinical and technical excellence for which we aim.”
