As a member of UPMC Cancer Centers, The Robert E. Eberly Pavilion offers the most advanced radiation treatment available, right here in Uniontown.
"We have some exciting new technologies," remarks Dr. Elmer Cano, a Uniontown Hospital radiation oncologist at The Robert E. Eberly Pavilion. "Our IMRT technology and PET/CT scanner are allowing us to deliver more accurate treatment than ever before. And we're the only ones in Fayette County who offer it."
IMRT stands for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, and is a state-of-the-art treatment that allows specialists like Dr. Cano to deliver radiation to a tumor while sparing nearly all the healthy tissue around it.
"This is great for patients," Dr. Cano states. "They experience significantly fewer side effects, and enjoy the potential of higher cure rates."
PET/CT is a new combination of two types of imaging that gives doctors more complete and accurate information about cancer in even the earliest stages.
According to Dr. Cano, "PET/CT is phenomenal. We can visualize and monitor cancer at a cellular level - before other forms of imaging can begin to detect it."
PET/CT scans help specialists understand the extent and exact location of cancer, so they can treat the disease earlier and more accurately.
"Our capabilities for treating patients with radiation therapy have reached the highest levels available today," says Dr. Cano. "And now, patients don't have to leave Fayette County for this advanced technology."
