Beginning Feb. 21, Uniontown Hospital will be offering an all-new Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to provide another step in the continuum of care for area cardiac patients.

The hospital’s Cardiology Department, recognized by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association for exceptional care of heart attack patients, will offer the new service for cardiac patients that will include an individualized and personalized treatment plan.

“This program really allows us to provide for the full care of our cardiac patients,” CEO Steve Handy said. “We are friends, neighbors and family caring for friends, neighbors and family and programs like this that help to bridge the gap between inpatient care and long term maintenance programs will give area residents a local option for ensuring they are doing everything they can to fully recover and care for their heart.”

Sandy Thorpe, Executive Director of Critical Care Services at Uniontown Hospital, said that the new program boasts healthful benefits to cardiac patients including longer lifespans, reduced risk of future heart attacks and greater control of symptoms of heart disease, including chest pain and shortness of breath.

“We are proud to further our excellent care for area cardiac patients and excited to give residents a local option for that in-between level of cardiac rehab that they didn’t have before,” Thorpe said. “This rehab is an important piece of the recovery process to help lessen the physical and emotional effects of heart disease.”

As one of the top providers of interventional cardiac care in the region, with more than 1,000 patients receiving care annually in the Cardiac Cath Lab and more than 9,000 patients treated each year in the Cardiac Diagnostic Center, Uniontown Hospital is leading the way for heart health in southwestern Pennsylvania.

In addition to the immediate care of heart attack patients in the Cardiac Cath Lab and their continued care through the new rehab program, the hospital remains partnered with the Uniontown YMCA to offer a long term Cardiac Rehabilitation Maintenance Program for patients to continue to care for their heart.

“The key to all of the cardiology programs is for patients to remain engaged by assessing their risk factors, making exercise a part of their normal routines and working on healthy lifestyle changes,” Cardiology Clinical Director Lisa Ezzi, said.
